Safety & Gas Regulations

Keep your caravan safe with simple checks, proper certifications, and clear records. Use this page as a practical reference for gas, electrical, fire and CO safety.

Gas Safety (LPG)

  • Annual service by a Gas Safe registered engineer (LPG + leisure homes).
  • Check flexible hoses, regulators and pigtails for cracks, date marks and tight connections.
  • Keep ventilation grilles clear; never block high/low level vents.
  • Store cylinders upright, outside in a ventilated space; turn off when not in use or during transport.
  • Keep copies of your gas safety certificate and service reports.

Electrical Safety

  • Test the RCD/RCBO using the “Test” button every month.
  • Have a periodic inspection (EICR) performed at recommended intervals by a qualified electrician.
  • Check sockets, switches and appliance leads for heat marks, looseness or damage.
  • Do not overload multi-adapters; use correctly rated extension leads only when necessary.
  • Record any remedial actions and dates completed.

Carbon Monoxide & Detectors

  • Fit CO alarms in rooms with fuel-burning appliances and test monthly.
  • Fit smoke alarms in circulation areas; replace batteries and out-of-date units.
  • Never use BBQs, patio heaters or portable gas heaters inside the caravan.

If a CO alarm sounds: ventilate immediately, turn off gas, leave the unit and seek help.

Fire Safety & Escape

  • Keep a serviced dry powder extinguisher and a fire blanket near the kitchen.
  • Know your escape routes; ensure doors/windows open easily and are not obstructed.
  • Keep combustibles away from heaters and hob; supervise cooking.
  • Check decking and gas bottle areas are free of ignition sources.

Simple Routine Checks (Quick List)

  • Test smoke & CO alarms; note expiry dates.
  • RCD “Test” monthly; inspect visible cables/plug tops.
  • Check gas hoses/regulator condition and secure connections.
  • Confirm vents are clear inside and out; clear any lint/dust.
  • Keep exits, keys and torches accessible.

Keep Your Records in One Place

  • Gas safety certificate, appliance service sheets and receipts.
  • EICR and any electrical remedial certificates.
  • Alarm purchase dates, battery changes and test logs.
  • Insurance policy schedule and claims/emergency numbers.

In an Emergency

  1. Gas leak suspected: turn off supply, open windows/doors, no flames/sparks, evacuate, call the park/emergency services.
  2. Electrical fault: isolate at consumer unit if safe; do not touch wet/damaged equipment.
  3. Fire: evacuate, call 999; only use an extinguisher if safe and trained.
