Volunteer Adviser Policy

Last updated: August 2026

The National Static Caravan Owners Union (NSCOU) welcomes experienced volunteers who wish to contribute their knowledge, skills and expertise to help strengthen the Union and support its members.

Volunteer Advisers provide strategic guidance, mentoring and specialist advice to the Executive Committee. Their experience helps the Union develop effective governance, stronger campaigns, improved member services and long-term organisational growth.

Purpose

The purpose of the Volunteer Adviser programme is to bring experienced individuals into the Union to provide independent advice and practical support in areas such as governance, strategy, campaigning, member engagement, organisational development and public affairs.

Appointment

Volunteer Advisers are appointed by the Executive Committee following an appropriate assessment of their experience and suitability. The appointment process will normally include:

  • Submission of a curriculum vitae (CV) or summary of relevant experience.
  • An informal discussion or interview.
  • Completion of a Conflict of Interest Declaration.
  • Acceptance of the Volunteer Adviser Policy.
  • Agreement to maintain confidentiality.

Appointments are normally made for an initial six-month period and may be reviewed and renewed where appropriate.

Role of a Volunteer Adviser

Volunteer Advisers may assist the Union by:

  • Providing strategic advice to the Executive Committee.
  • Supporting the development of governance and organisational policies.
  • Reviewing procedures and member communications.
  • Helping develop national campaigns.
  • Supporting the recruitment and mentoring of regional representatives.
  • Sharing specialist knowledge and best practice.
  • Participating in working groups and projects.

Authority

Volunteer Advisers provide advice and recommendations only. They do not hold executive authority, voting rights or decision-making powers unless separately appointed to another official position within NSCOU.

Volunteer Advisers may not commit the Union financially, enter into contracts, issue instructions on behalf of NSCOU or represent the Union publicly unless specifically authorised by the Executive Committee.

Confidentiality

Volunteer Advisers may have access to confidential information relating to members, governance, finances or Union operations. All confidential information must be treated responsibly and handled in accordance with UK data protection legislation and NSCOU policies.

Conflicts of Interest

Volunteer Advisers must declare any actual, potential or perceived conflicts of interest before appointment and whenever circumstances change. Where a conflict exists, the Executive Committee will determine the appropriate course of action.

Standards of Conduct

Volunteer Advisers are expected to:

  • Act honestly, professionally and with integrity.
  • Support the aims and values of NSCOU.
  • Treat members, volunteers and stakeholders with dignity and respect.
  • Maintain confidentiality.
  • Declare conflicts of interest.
  • Help protect the reputation of the Union.

Expenses

Volunteer Adviser positions are unpaid. Reasonable expenses may be reimbursed where they have been approved in advance by the Executive Committee and are supported by appropriate evidence.

Ending an Appointment

Either NSCOU or the Volunteer Adviser may end the appointment at any time by giving reasonable notice.

The Executive Committee may end an appointment immediately where there has been serious misconduct, a breach of confidentiality, failure to comply with Union policies or behaviour that could reasonably bring the Union into disrepute.

Our Commitment

NSCOU recognises the value that experienced volunteers bring to the organisation. By sharing their knowledge and supporting the Executive Committee, Volunteer Advisers play an important role in helping the Union grow into a strong, respected and effective voice for static caravan and holiday home owners across the United Kingdom.
